Because service costs tend to rise with volume (unlike manufacturing, where they top out and then decline), many services business are less profitable as they get larger. So growth alone doesn’t get you to where you want to be. It’s getting the costs down that makes the big bucks. Hence I take an “end to end” view of a service business and try to get them to do the same.
